Datamation 1968: every modern tech debate already in print

Casey Muratori joins The Standup to show off the material that did not fit into his Better Software Conference 2026 talk "The Root of the Root of All Evil". While hunting for one advertisement Dijkstra had derogatorily referenced, he ended up reading the first six months of 1968's Datamation trade magazine - and found that nearly every argument we are having today was already in print: AI anxiety, mass data mining, SaaS, software patents, virtual machines, licence-plate surveillance, and "computers are better than the experts and the experts are in denial".

Why the phrase needed context

Knuth's "premature optimization is the root of all evil" first hit paper in Structured Programming with go to Statements (Computing Surveys, not Communications of the ACM as Casey first says on air, then corrects). He said it in a lecture slightly earlier, but the paper's manuscript was already submitted. Casey wanted to know what was going on around Knuth at the time - the structured-programming debates, what professors were actually worried about - because knowing the period makes the phrase concrete rather than a slogan.

The cost of a history talk

Roughly two weeks of 16-hour days per talk, on top of research he happened to do a year or two earlier. Prime's rule of thumb is 40 hours per hour of conference talk; Casey says his is higher because of the reading volume. He never gets to rehearse - he gives the talk off slides finished minutes before.

His argument against outsourcing it to AI is the sharpest part of the segment: the value is in immersing yourself in material without a preconceived question. The useful finds are things you did not know you were looking for, so a research assistant - human or model - answering the questions you already have destroys the point. He is running an experiment on this with Dimitri (handing the same research paragraph to Anthropic, OpenAI and Gemini models) for a later episode, and is careful to say he has not actually tried it himself.

Where both find AI genuinely useful: locating original sources when you have no starting point, OCRing badly scanned PDFs, and converting unscrollable old web pages into readable local markdown or HTML.

Prime's version: after three hours of AI-assisted research he has to read the paper anyway, because otherwise he cannot vouch for accuracy.

1968, as printed

Datamation was digitised by Bit Savers. Twelve issues a year; Casey only got through the first six of 1968, and everything below comes from that half-year.

  • 4K display :: a product announcement for a 4096x4096 raster display. In 1968.
  • Salaries :: computer careers listed at $100k-$350k in today's dollars (roughly 10x the printed figures). Silicon Valley pay, already.
  • AI anxiety :: an IBM piece on "Hexapawn, a learning demonstration" opens from the premise that people believe the computer is a threat to man because it possesses an intelligence dwarfing his, and argues the public needs the basic principles explained to dissipate the mystery. It notes an "underlying sense of anxiety" accompanying positive attitudes toward computers.
  • Data mining :: Senator Edward V. Long's subcommittee reported citizens' names appearing 3 billion times in federal files, ages 2 billion, marital status 1.5 billion, income 1.25 billion. Long's line: whatever privacy remains does so only because the federal government is presently too inefficient to join its files together, and the proposed federal data bank would put your whole life history a button-push away.
  • SaaS :: "lease your software with no capital investment" - pay monthly, stop paying, they take it back. "The benefits are great."
  • Software patents :: 1968 was the year a bill that would have banned software patents was introduced and rejected.
  • Conway's Law :: the April issue's table of contents carries the original publication of "How Do Committees Invent?".
  • Firmware :: the term was coined in 1967; by 1968 they were discussing computers of the future having firmware in them.
  • Virtual machines :: an article on an experimental System/360 Model 40 for time-sharing describes hardware-assisted supervision where the user cannot reach others' data and sees only a "virtual machine", which need not match the host's specifications. Hypervisors, described as a solved idea.
  • Licence-plate surveillance :: New York State's program to capture video of a vehicle's rear, extract the plate's alphanumeric code, transmit it to a remote central computer for matching against stolen vehicle and warrant files, and have a nearby police car intercept two or three seconds later. Flock cameras, 1968.
  • Computers in elections :: the DNC replacing a 1401 with a five-tape 360/30 running two and a half shifts; the RNC renting 25 hours a month on an SDS Model 40.
  • AI lawyers :: a proposal to have computers read legal opinions and predict what the judge would do.
  • The AI-defender op-ed :: a reader with 15 years in the field writes that he has watched unemployment, dehumanisation, Big Brother, invasion of privacy and the destruction of society's fibre blamed on his field, and will no longer stay silent - "to err is human". His example: radiologists rejected computer assistance with "you cannot automate years of study and value judgement", then in a test missed the vital interpretation the computer caught early enough to act on. (Prime's response, tweeted live: "to err is agentic.")
  • Ray tracing :: Wikipedia dates the first ray-traced image to April 1968; Casey found three ray-traced images in a February 1968 advertisement for a company selling ray-tracing as a service.
  • Comedy, undeclared :: Datamation ran straight parody articles with no marking, indistinguishable in layout from the dry material - an announcement of "Assembler Stack Support (ASS)", and a hexadecimal pronunciation guide (A=Ann, B=Bett, C=Chris, D=Dott, E=Ernest, F=Frost, hence "Frosty-2", "Anti-Christine").
  • Other artefacts :: the COPE 45 computer promising "100% backup with immediate turnaround in a load-and-go environment"; storage at 1.5 cents per bit; a COBOL recruiting ad whose acronym expands to "Career Opportunities Beyond Old Limits" (both agree the advice still pays today); Alan F. Westin's Privacy and Freedom reviewed at $10; "don't eat in the computer room" - static attracts crumbs, crumbs dent tape, dents become permanent errors.

The takeaway

Casey's summary: hardware got enormously better and otherwise we are in almost exactly the same place. People knew what was coming and it happened anyway. His reason for doing history this way is not to tell you what to think about optimization - that would be an op-ed - but to put your brain back in the period by reading what those people read, so you can feel what was actually going on when the sentence was written.
