- Original title :: How to Deal with a Control Freak Toxic Boss
A control-freak manager isn't fixed by earning their trust - trust isn't the lever. The fix is starving the uncertainty that makes them micromanage in the first place, by making the work visible before they have to chase it.
Every time you wait for a control-freak boss to chase you for a status update, you teach them that chasing works. Instead, send one high-signal update before they ask - shipped, blocked, next, risk, decision needed - not a diary, just enough that they don't have to invent a disaster in their head. Move the work out of private chats and into things people can see: tickets, acceptance criteria, dashboards, decision notes, PR summaries. When they insist on dictating exactly how to build something, make the cost of their approach explicit (adds two days, creates a migration risk, harder rollback) and name the safer option - that reframes the conversation from a fight over autonomy into a discussion of costs. Micromanagement feeds on uncertainty, so removing the uncertainty - not demanding trust - is what changes the dynamic.
