What's next? [Git forge]
After his "I give up on GitHub" video, Theo surveys the alternatives and lands on a recommendation: use Forgejo / Codeberg as the open source forge, watch Pierre (code.so) as the next-gen UX play. He donated $1,200 to Forgejo to put money behind it.
Survey
- GitLab: still the practical enterprise self-host but heavy and bureaucratic; UX hasn't kept up.
- Gitea / Forgejo: Forgejo is the community fork after Gitea went for-profit. Codeberg.org is the hosted Forgejo Theo points readers at. Lightweight, federated work in progress.
- Sourcehut: ideologically pure but mailing-list-first workflow turns off most modern devs.
- Pierre (code.so): brand-new commercial play with a polished UX and AI-native review flow; not OSS but the most exciting product Theo has tried in this space.
Recommendation
- For self-host / OSS allegiance: Forgejo + Codeberg.
- For best product right now: Pierre, with reservations about long-term openness.
- Theo donated $1,200 to Forgejo; encourages viewers to fund whichever forge they want to survive — leaving GitHub means nothing if no alternative is sustainably staffed.
